Advancing Community-Centered Connectivity: Internet Kiosks strengthening local digital access

Access to the Internet remains a critical enabler of education, economic opportunity, and social inclusion. Under its Digital Inclusion for Rural Communities Program,

The Internet Society Rwanda Chapter continues to support community-centered connectivity solutions that respond to local needs and empower underserved populations leverage the Internet for socio-economic development.

As part of this ongoing program, two community Internet kiosks are now fully operational in Karongi and Nyagatare Districts, marking an important milestone in expanding affordable and reliable Internet access in rural areas.

Bringing Connectivity Closer to Communities

The Internet kiosks were established to serve as shared digital access points for community members who face barriers such as high connectivity costs, limited infrastructure, or lack of digital skills. Each kiosk provides:

  • Affordable Internet access
  • Support for online government services and education
  • Digital business and entrepreneurship opportunities
  • A platform for community learning and engagement

Beyond connectivity, the kiosks are locally managed, creating employment opportunities while ensuring long-term sustainability and community ownership.

Strengthening Local Capacity and Digital Skills

The establishment of the kiosks was accompanied by capacity-building efforts, equipping local operators and beneficiaries with essential digital skills. This approach ensures that connectivity is not only available, but also meaningfully used to support livelihoods, education, and access to essential services.

The operational kiosks in Karongi and Nyagatare contribute to ISOC Rwanda’s broader mission of promoting an open, secure, and accessible Internet for all. They demonstrate how community-driven solutions can bridge connectivity gaps while supporting local development.
